Renovating an entire rail structure during a shutdown
In industry, a lack of time is the rule rather than the exception. Yet periodic maintenance is essential to keep the production process running smoothly. The rail structure at Tata Steel IJmuiden was due for a thorough renovation, but the available shutdown time was extremely limited. Every additional day of downtime directly affects Tata Steel's production.
The challenge was multifaceted: the concrete had to be removed without damaging the existing reinforcement, the new foundation had to be accurate to the millimetre, and the whole job had to be completed within the tight time window. Only a combined deployment of specialists could achieve this.
The impossible made possible by VTG and ADS
By combining the specialist expertise of VTG Beton and Aqua Demolition Services, the two parties made the impossible possible. While ADS carried out the hydrodemolition and removed the deteriorated concrete while sparing the reinforcement, VTG prepared the grouting mortar and the additional reinforcement. The work ran in parallel, saving valuable time.
In just three weeks the entire rail structure was restored — an achievement that would not have been feasible without the combined efforts of both specialists. The tight planning, daily coordination and the professionalism of both teams made this result possible.
Hydrodemolition as the key to reusing the existing reinforcement
The great advantage of hydrodemolition in this project was that the existing reinforcement and anchoring could be fully reused. By selectively removing the concrete with high-pressure water, the reinforcement remained intact and undamaged. After applying additional auxiliary reinforcement, VTG quickly and effectively renovated the rail structure using a high-quality grouting mortar.
The synergy between VTG and Aqua Demolition Services resulted in an exceptionally short turnaround time. Within three weeks the entire rail structure was restored and ready for a new production cycle. Thanks to this approach, the structure will once again function for many years without major maintenance.
